Launched in 2024, the David Mahungu Leadership Foundation (DMLF) is a Kenyan non-profit organization that aims to provide opportunities and space to youth from economically and socially marginalized backgrounds to enable them to meet their full potential and become pro-active agents of change capable of leading their communities towards a more just and resilient society. Through the provision of formal tertiary education, individualized mentorship, partnership development and networking, and comprehensive leadership training, participating youth will empower themselves to contribute to their local, national, and international communities through innovation, poverty reduction, economic expansion, and the growth of civil society. Initially, participants will be drawn from communities in Laikipia County, extending the reach country-wide over the next few years.
Before his passing, David and his mother, Patricia Wangui, were providing financial support to university students, mainly from Laikipia and mentoring them in preparation to transition from life in the rural area and adjust to life in University. David continued to mentor these students through their years at University. It was after David’s passing that his Mum, together with close friends and family, decided to formalize and expand upon this work by launching the David Mahungu Leadership Foundation to continue and consolidate the work David and Patricia had started.
